A First Glimpse Picture of India

Written in first few days of being in India

We arrived in India late on the 28th, or very early morning on the 29th, greeted with India leias smelling of the sweet smell of Jasmine. We squeezed into a van and made our way to our new home.

Thus far, we have shopped for Indian outfits, eaten delicious Indian food, sweat a few bullets in the heat, slept on hard beds with thin mattresses, played a lot of guitar, ukelele, and drums, ventured out to internet cafes where you pay to access the internet on an old PC computer, squished into vehicles for travel, experienced an Indian style dental cleaning, showered with buckets of water and hoses, met Bollywood Actresses, and visited the homes of some Indian families and prayed with them.

Traveling around in India looks like small rig shaws with three seats carrying up to 6 people, an 18 passenger van carrying up to 28 people, or more if you are brave :).  It's cars, bikes, buses, rig shaws, pulling into traffic from all directions, beeping their horns forcing their way through. It looks like people riding on the backs of motorcycles with no seatbelts or helmets, it looks like folding chairs being used as extra seats in vehicles.

Out on the roads, you pass dogs and cows everywhere, trash tossed into yards, the sides of roads and anywhere. The air wreaks of sewage and cow waste and after 5:30pm swarms or clouds of mosquitoes come out.  It is then that everyone gives thanks for mosquito guards on the windows and bug spray....

While the streets, bathrooms and such are not the most glamorous, the people are very friendly.  To access internet, you need an Indian phone number, and a few of us were helped by people to get online.  The people are interested in who we are.

The shopping is full of color, and the people are eager to help you in your shopping efforts.  They are quick to search for your items and spend devoted time to helping you get what you need.  When visiting someone's home, they are quick to welcome you in and make you comfortable, even offering you food and drink.  While at Starbucks, a couple Indian women even bought us some coffee and cookies!  We were treated like their own guests.

We look forward to getting to interact with the people more! Compared to Israel, the schedule is very nice and relaxed. Today we began preparations for VBS which will start next week.  Tomorrow we will enjoy our first India church experience.
